what you will learn

This training is part of the Collab Series, where we amplify the voices of clinicians doing awesome things. When Grounding Backfires a self-paced, non-interactive video training course that is appropriate for all licensed mental health professionals. In trauma-informed care, grounding is often treated as the go-to response to distress. But for some clients, being brought back into the body or present moment can increase fear, shame, dissociation, or shutdown. Jen Woodrome helps clinicians recognize when grounding is backfiring and respond with greater attunement, flexibility & respect for client autonomy. Participants will learn practical ways to adjust in the moment so stabilization is guided by felt safety rather than rigid skill delivery. Course Objectives -Identify common signs that grounding interventions are increasing distress, dissociation, shame, or shutdown in trauma survivors. -Describe several underlying assumptions embedded in grounding techniques and explain why those assumptions may not hold true for clients with chronic or developmental trauma. -Differentiate between grounding interventions that increase regulation and those that unintentionally escalate threat responses. -Apply relationally attuned alternatives when grounding techniques are not effective or become destabilizing. -Utilize collaborative, choice-based approaches to stabilization that prioritize client safety, pacing, and nervous system capacity. Content Level: Beginner Course Requirements This course contains one video lesson and one role play. After watching the videos, you will complete a 10-question quiz and must score 80% or higher. You have unlimited quiz retakes. You must complete all content & an end-of-course evaluation & then your CE certificate will be downloadable in your account. NBCC CE Hours: 1 CE hour Social workers completing this course receive 1 Clinical Continuing Education Credit. (See the Fine Print section below for all details related to CE accreditation.)
